We’re excited to welcome Nolan to our SCEC team. Nolan started this past April as a temporary summer hire and was then brought on full-time Oct. 16, where he will continue his training as an Apprentice Lineworker. Nolan grew up in Hayward, WI. Growing up watching his father work as a lineworker at Jump River Electric Cooperative inspired Nolan to pursue a career as a lineworker – specifically, a lineworker at a cooperative. His father shared with him the advantages of working at a cooperative, especially feeling the pride in being able to provide safe and reliable service for the community you live in.
Nolan attended Chippewa Valley Technical College (CVTC) in Eau Claire where he was enrolled in their Electrical Power Distribution program. As part of his apprenticeship requirements, Nolan will go back to CVTC for in-person classes four times a year. He will need to complete 640 hours of instruction time and four years (7,360 hours) of on-the-job training to become a certified journeyman lineworker.
After he graduated from CVTC, he personally drove to nearly every co-op in Wisconsin to hand-deliver his resume. While he was at SCEC, he met with Rob Dooley, who was then the Operations Manager. He must have made an impression because he got a call when a job opening became available.
Nolan says he is enjoying his time here and is learning a lot. He appreciates that the line crew has diverse backgrounds and experiences that he can learn from. He said, “They are a lot of fun and very helpful.”
When not on the job, Nolan likes to fly-fish and ties his own flies. He also likes to hunt goose and grouse. He was on his high school trap shooting team and competed in the state tournament. Nolan has also been volunteering at the American Birkebeiner Cross-Country Ski Race in Cable every year, even though he isn’t a skier!
