DrivEV Weekend 2019 - Chad Denucci

To celebrate National Co-op Month in October, St. Croix Electric Cooperative offered members the chance to enter a DrivEV Weekend! drawing to take home (or to the road) the co-op’s Bolt EV, the first affordable all-electric car to offer an EPA-estimated 238 miles of range on a single charge.

In the first weekend in October, Chad Denucci (pictured in the Bolt with daughter Anna) drove the car 143 miles, visiting Jeweltown Coffee in Star Prairie and taking numerous trips from his home near Four Corners to New Richmond.

“It was nice to drive an electric vehicle for a weekend to learn how they work, handle and operate,” Chad said. “I was impressed with the acceleration and the overall ride … Electric vehicles will definitely be considered during our next vehicle purchase."

St. Croix Electric Cooperative offers a rebate on charging stations and a special EV charging rate. For more information contact Director Member Services Jeff Wahlquist via email or at 715-796-5612.

Each driver is asked to leave notes about their experience. Here are Chad's:

Name(s): Chad Denucci

Starting mileage: 14,065

Ending mileage: 14,208

Dates: 10-4-19 to 10-6-19

Total miles driven: 143

Feelings/concerns/questions upon pick-up: Having never driven an electric car before, just general questions on operations, charging, etc.

Where we went: Jewltown Coffee in Star Prairie, numerous trips from our home near Four Corners to New Richmond.

Impression of vehicle/driving experience:

A big thank you to St. Croix Electric for providing the opportunity to test drive the Chevy Bolt for the weekend. It was nice to be able to drive an electric vehicle for a weekend to learn how they work, handle and operate. We used it mostly for trips to town and normal travel.

I was impressed with the acceleration and the overall ride.

The car has all the features of my other vehicles. It took awhile to get used to pedal brake, but once I did it was useful for regeneration while coming to a stop.

We charged it overnight on Saturday for 11 hours @ 8 amp rate and picked up 37 miles for the charge.

As others mention, I would be interested in understanding the impact of extreme cold and extreme heat on the battery charge life, as well as how much heat and AC draw on battery life.

All in all, a very nice car and a very nice ride.

Again, a big thank you to St. Croix Electric for providing this opportunity. Electric vehicles will definitely be considered during our next vehicle purchase.
